Juniors In Boating

To support and assist in the development of high caliber sailboat racers.

Juniors in Boating (JIB) was established as a California nonprofit benefit Corporation in 1982 to support and assist in the development of high caliber sailboat racers  by supporting and financially assisting young racers to participate in sailboat racing association events, seminars, special classes, lectures and regattas.

I am totally motivated to qualify for the next Junior Snipe Worlds. The experience was amazing and I can’t thank JIB enough for providing the needed funding that helped me compete in Spain. Thank you!!

JIB has been an enormous support so far for which I am hugely grateful and I know that without all the support that I have had in the past with the 29er this regatta would not have been as successful as it was. Thank you!

Success in sailing is, in part, dependent on the young sailor’s ability to participate in a sailing events that challenge and broaden their skills, outlook, and spirit. JIB was critical in supporting my efforts well before I had earned any notable achievements. Without their support early on I would not have had the exposure to national and international competition which allowed me to understand the commitment and qualities necessary to gain international competitiveness. I am deeply grateful to JIB, its board members, and especially its donors. I look forward to reciprocating their support in the future.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF JUNIORS IN BOATING

Juniors in Boating (JIB) was founded in 1982 as a California nonprofit benefit corporation. A board of nine directors manages this corporation. Under Article IIIa of the JIB by-laws, the Board is charged with the following:

“To support and assist the development of high caliber sailboat racers in the United States by supporting and financially assisting young racers to participate in regionally organized sailboat racing association events, seminars, special classes, lectures, and regattas.”

From its inception in 1982 through 1994 the JIB Board of Directors spent a considerable amount of time and effort fundraising by soliciting monetary donations and selling merchandise/clothing.

In 1995 JIB was asked by the MBYC Board of Directors to consider expanding its charter to help financially assist adult sailors when competing at elite levels when deemed consistent with the JIB by-laws and its charter. The JIB Board of Directors approved this change.

In 1996, to better support more sailors, the MBYC Board of Directors instituted a voluntary donation to JIB on the MBYC members’ bill. This has significantly enhanced JIB’s ability to fully support a broader base of sailors.

Throughout its history JIB has sponsored and organized many racing clinics for the benefit of both Junior and Senior sailors. Many of these events are put on by sailors who volunteer their time as a thank you to the support that has been given to them by JIB in their pursuit of an advanced level of sailing skills.

Numerous other sailors have been funded by JIB for such events as: U.S. Sailing Junior Olympic Youth Championships, Junior Olympics, Snipe Junior Worlds, Cressy Single Handed Championship, Alter Cup, Ida Lewis Jr. Women’s Championship, 29er Nationals, Orange Bowl Regatta CISA Advanced Racing Clinics, Governors Cup, Valentine’s Day Regatta, and many others. JIB has also sponsored and organized racing clinics for the benefit of the junior and adult sailors. The last two clinics sponsored by JIB were given by Dawn Riley and Dave Perry.
